A first look at Artifacts
The basics
Artifacts is a common term in the AI field; in Chinese it's translated as “工件” (see Anthropic: What are Artifacts).
"Artifact" sounds technical, but the idea is plain: a finished deliverable you can pick up and use as-is. A factory's parts, a designer's blueprints, a baker's loaves — all artifacts. The little dashboard the AI builds for you works the same way: it's the AI's finished work, handed over for you to open anytime, without asking it to rebuild it each time.
An Artifact is a finished piece the AI assistant builds to your requirements. It can be a line chart, a number card, a ranked list — what it looks like depends on what you want to see. Unlike a throwaway chat answer, an Artifact is packaged, stored in a fixed place, and ready to view again and again.
You probably check the same kinds of data every day — today's sales, this month's new hires, last week's reimbursement progress. It's a bit like ordering the same coffee every morning: you used to repeat "medium latte, less sugar" to the barista each time.
